Indian restaurants in Tehran

Many people may not know this, but Tehran has a significant number of people of Indian descent living in the capital, with communities of Sikhs, Hindus, Muslims and others from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Many people may not know this, but Tehran has a significant number of people of Indian descent living in the capital, with communities of Sikhs, Hindus, Muslims and others from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

So, with that in mind, here are some of the best restaurants we think deserve to be on our list of good Indian eateries in the Iranian capital. Generally, Indian food was not very popular in Iran because of its spicy nature, but in recent years, denizens of the city have grown more accustomed to hot foods with the introduction of spicy sauces available in local supermarkets.

Isn’t Iranian food hot? No, not generally. One of the biggest misconceptions about Iranian food is that many foreigners believe it is because of the country’s proximity to India and Pakistan. So, as peoples palettes continue to grow, here is our hit list of good curry houses.

Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant and Hotel

The Taj Mahal Restaurant and adjoining hotel are not easily missed with the architecture of the building reminiscent of an Indian Castle. Like many Indian restaurants abroad, there is a broad range of Indian dishes on offer, including Vegetarian and meat curries.

They set nicely the tables and the Sikh manager at the restaurant oversees the place and guides the guest to their tables politely and cordially. The place has a sort of Indian decor but at some points could be considered a little OTT.

Cingari Indian Restaurant

If you’re in the central business district of Tehran then why not head to Cingari, a popular Indian restaurant with a full range of curries and kebab dishes. Also, they make a fabulous Indian naan.

The design and décor of the restaurant is a good fit for a modern eating experience, with plenty of vegetarian option available, as is traditional with Indian food. The kitchen is clearly visible from the tables and the staff are very attentive. We’d say this is in the upper echelons of eating out experiences in Tehran and don’t expect “cheap eats”.

Tandoor Indian Restaurant at Safir Hotel

Tandoor is one of the most southernly Indian eateries in the Iranian capital, situated behind the former US embassy complex. Blink and you’d miss it as Hotel Safir (book here) of which the restaurant is the basement part is set back from the road. You may spot the giant peacock on the door.

It has an excellent selection of Indian style dishes, some hot! You are greeted by Indian attire staff, and sometimes you will hear Indian tunes playing out across the room, if you are lucky.

During the spring, summer and autumn, the restaurant has a brilliant outside eating area which as you can imagine is surrounded by trees allowing you to enjoy your food in the presence of the birds in the yard.

The restaurant mimics classic Indian style restaurants in the west, with its selection of curry dishes as well as spiced kebabs, quite dissimilar to the Iranian variety we know so well.

Maharaja Restaurant

Following the restaurants in the basement theme. Maharaja Restaurant (classic) is in the basement of Jahan Hotel on Valiasr Street Taleqani St junction. This restaurant is a great location on the BRT line which traverses the city’s central spine.

Prices are fair, as are the other restaurants and you may be overrun with hotel guests and students on your visit who populate the local area (depending on the time of the year).

One of our reader’s rates the restaurant above all the others as the décor is very tasteful and the staff very attentive to requests of “make it hotter”.
