Few people expect to ski in Iran, but the resorts north of Tehran are among the highest in the world, with long seasons and excellent snow. Dizin, Shemshak, Darbandsar and the slopes at the top of Tochal are all within a couple of hours of the city. Skis, boots and boards can be hired at the resorts, but the quality varies, so it is worth bringing your own smaller items.

What to bring.
- Ski goggles, ideally with a lens for bright sun, as the light at altitude is intense.
- Waterproof ski gloves.
- A ski helmet: some resorts hire them, but supply is limited.
- Merino base layers and ski socks.
- A neck gaiter for wind on the upper lifts.
- SPF 50 sun cream and lip balm: sunburn is the most common complaint.

Hire and buying. Each resort has hire shops for skis, boards, boots and poles. Ski clothing can be bought in Tehran, but brands are limited and imported items are expensive. If you plan to ski several days, bring your own boots if they fit well.
Dress code. Women are expected to cover their hair on the slopes, usually with a hat, balaclava or neck gaiter, which is practical in the cold anyway.
Getting there. The roads to Dizin and Shemshak climb steeply from Fasham and can need snow chains. Check road conditions and resort opening before you go. See our guide to skiing near Tehran and Fasham guide.
