Accessibility in Tehran: Occupational Therapy products in Iran

Living in Tehran can be difficult for those with limited movement. However, there is one company which aims to help people keep active in their homes. That occupational therapy firm is called Kian Tajhiz Mehr Afarin (KTMA) and was created to see the ever-increasing need for these products in homes.

How big is the elderly cohort in Iran?

People over the age of 60 currently make up 9.5% (7.6mn) of Iran’s population of 80mn. The government understanding this growing issue in society is now actively promoting better products in the sector. In Tehran, the number of seniors is growing at a faster rate than other parts of the country with an estimated 11% of people now in the group.

The company (retailing under the Lord brand) specialises in creating products for safety in bathrooms, kitchens and bedrooms. The aim to support the elderly by KTMA aims to meet the Hassan Rouhani administration’s push for developing the sector and providing more support for the old.

What are the products?

The range of products includes grab bars for bathrooms, both fixed and movable as well as bedroom equipment which helps people get out of bed

As women make up the bulk of the elderly population in Tehran and other larger cities, Iran sees the cohort become increasingly ‘feminized’ according to one report in the Iranian FT.

Earlier this year Swedish firm, MentMed AB, signed a memorandum of understanding with Kian Tajhiz Mehr Afarin to develop accessibility products for the elderly and disabled in Iran.

The deal is potentially worth over $1 million, with further investment likely within the next five years.

KTMA produces occupational therapy devices for the domestic market, Persian Gulf countries and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region.

Anna Russberg, director of MentMed AB, said she chose to work with KTMA to help expand its distribution internationally and serve the local community. “The firm is trying to help people by providing high-quality products to enhance people’s lives and make hospitals safe for patients with reduced mobility,” she said.

Where to buy?

The best place to purchase Lord-branded products is on websites including online retailer Bamilo.com.
