Time Museum: Back to the 19th Century

The Safir Language Academy is holding a one-day tour to Tehran’s Time Museum in English and French languages. So for you horologists out there, this is a real treat!

The Iranian capital which is home to many museums is also home to the country’s first Time Museum. Founded in 1999, the museum was created in a nearly century-old mansion inside a 5 hectares garden that dates back to Muhammad Shah and Naser al-din Shah Qajar Era.

A large number of bedside clocks, as well as pocket and wristwatches, are on display at the museum. Some of the exhibits bear the signature of their makers. The walls of the museum are graced with documents on the Iranian calendar.

In the outdoor section, recreations such as sundials, water clocks, sand, and fuel-based timepieces are presented.

On the first floor of the mansion, the evolution of mechanical watches from the seventeenth century to the twentieth century is on display. This is while on the second floor, conventional pocket watches, watches owned by prominent political and historical characters, and also specific clocks related to time stamping cards, shift guards, ships, and army in different types are on display.

The oldest dated Persian document, mechanical watches from ancient and pre-Islamic era to more contemporary ones are also on display in the museum.

The tour will be conducted by Safir Academy in English and French languages on Thursday, June 29 from 8:30 am to 13:00 pm and it will cost 500,000 IRR. It includes transportation via a tourist bus, entrance fee, English or French speaking tour guide, snacks and insurance.
